SMSG runs three RACGP-accredited training practices across southern Sydney — Bangor (Group A), Earlwood and Sans Souci (Group B) — under one clinical group. What ties the three together is the group's sub-brands: Aurora Women & Babies Health, Excelsia Specialists Centre, Kids' Dr, Clarion Skin Cancer Clinic and Sydney Cosmedic. Registrars training here work inside that integrated model, not alongside it.
The group is Great Place to Work certified, and Earlwood Medical Centre was the 2024 Winner of the CESPHN Excellence in General Practice Award. The teaching philosophy is straightforward: build genuinely capable specialist GPs by giving them protected time, thoughtful supervision, complex caseloads, and specialists down the corridor.
The commitment is long-term. Around 50 registrars have trained across the network in the last 12 years. Eight of the GPs currently working here started as registrars — the door stays open, and many come back between terms, as fellows, or years later, always by choice.

What we're looking for
Registrars who genuinely want to be here.
Essential. Current AHPRA registration as a medical practitioner, enrolled (or seeking placement) in the Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) program, and alignment with patient-centred, evidence-based general practice.
Welcomed. Prior hospital experience across paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, emergency medicine, psychiatry, palliative care and internal medicine. Language skills relevant to our diverse community (Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Arabic and others are all valued).

Where you'd train
Three RACGP-accredited training practices.
Placement patterns and rotations between centres are agreed during the training-term match. Each centre publishes a full RACGP TMS profile with photos and testimonials.
Group B. 14+ consultation rooms, three-bed treatment room. Monday–Friday 9am–6pm and Saturday 9am–3pm. 2024 CESPHN Excellence in General Practice Award Winner. Broad specialist exposure via Excelsia and Sydney Cosmedic on site.

Common questions.
Which training programs do you accept?
SMSG accepts registrars from AGPT (Australian General Practice Training) across all three practices. As a metropolitan Sydney group we do not take PEP or RVTS candidates. Supervision runs from T1 through to Fellowship, including EAF terms and returning fellows.
How do you support exam preparation?
Weekly protected teaching time (uninterrupted), dedicated lecture-style supervisor teaching, an Examination Preparation Toolkit, Mock KFP exams and clinical exams, and group case discussion. A large and supportive administrative team coordinates Mini-CEXs and RCAs with the Supervisor team.
Who supervises registrars at SMSG?
Ten accredited supervisors across the three practices, all FRACGP. See the “Education and supervision” section above for named supervisors at each centre, their credentials, and their clinical interests. Principal Supervisors for GP Registrars: Dr Lisa Cheng and Prof Danforn Lim.
Is there a pathway to stay on after fellowship?
Yes. ~50 registrars have trained across the network in the last 12 years, and 8 of our currently practising GPs started here as registrars. The door stays open — many come back between terms, as fellows, or years later, always by choice.
What are the facilities like?
Earlwood has 14+ consultation rooms and a three-bed treatment room with at least three onsite nurses at all times. Bangor has 11 consultation rooms and a two-bed treatment room. Sans Souci has seven consultation rooms and a two-bed treatment room. All three are fully computerised on Best Practice, with onsite pathology collection and Yellow Fever vaccination accreditation.
